Grand County Case Study

COUNTY ROAD 519, GRAND COUNTY, CO

Sustainable Road Remediation & Restoration

The following GMS product was applied to the 6-inch road cap of County Road 519 in Grand County, CO:

GMS Soil Stabilizer will bolster the durability of the road, allow the road cap to repel moisture and allow rainwater to drain off the top of the road, and assist in dust control. The product is environmentally safe and will not harm vehicle exteriors.

Green Market Solutions, Inc. (GMS) is currently working with the Department of Road and Bridge, Grand County, Colorado, on a pilot project to prove the effectiveness of GMS Soil Stabilizer, a green and sustainable product for road remediation.

Grand County Colorado is located in a rural area of Colorado, approximately 110 miles from Denver, Colorado. In recent years, Grand County has treated their rural county roads with magnesium chloride for de-icing in the winter and road stabilization and dust control in the summer. However, the County is currently seeking alternative road treatments due to: environmental concerns, vehicle deterioration due to the corrosive effects of magnesium chloride, and limited durability of the magnesium chloride treatments - treated areas would develop pot holes and washboard ridges from vehicle usage.

Advisors from GMS worked on-site with Grand County Road personnel to execute the pilot project on a one-mile stretch of Grand County Road 519 in July, 2006. The product used, GMS Soil Stabilizer, is intended to stabilize the 6-inch road cap of Road 519. The GMS Soil Stabilizer product will bolster the durability of the road, allow the road cap to repel moisture and allow rainwater to drain off the top of the road, and assist in dust control. The product is environmentally safe and will not harm vehicle exteriors. Finally, the application of GMS Soil Stabilizer will “lock-in” and contain previous treatments of magnesium chloride present in the soil so as to minimize any negative aspects of concern from previous years of treatment.

The application of the GMS Soil Stabilizer product was performed in stages, involving:

  1. Pre-watering the stretch of road via surface broadcasting
  2. Grading the surface cap
  3. Applying the GMS Soil Stabilizer product via surface broadcasting
  4. Replacing the surface cap
  5. Compacting the surface

The treatment was successfully applied, and representatives from both GreenMarket Solutions and the Grand County Department of Road and Bridge are assessing the integrity of the treated road as it is utilized by County traffic during the Fall, Winter, and Spring months.

Recent status reports indicate that the treated stretch of road is withstanding the impact of constant usage by heavy-axle vehicles, such as logging trucks, and is maintaining its integrity. Final results are anticipated in the Spring of 2007.
